Orthognathic (Surgical) Orthodontic Treatment

Surgical orthodontic treatment, also known as orthognathic surgery, may be recommended for individuals with significant jaw or bite discrepancies that cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone. This type of care involves close coordination between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure precise planning and timing. With the use of in-office 3D CBCT imaging, we are able to evaluate jaw position and anatomy in greater detail, allowing for more accurate treatment planning. By addressing the underlying jaw alignment, treatment can help improve function such as chewing, speaking, and breathing, while also supporting facial balance and long-term oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about our dental services, procedures, and patient care in our FAQ section.

  • Recovery after surgical orthodontic treatment varies by individual. While initial healing occurs over the first several weeks, complete healing and stabilization may continue over several months.
  • As healing progresses, small adjustments to the bite may be needed, and your orthodontist will monitor these changes closely. Braces or aligners are usually continued for a period after surgery and are commonly removed later, depending on your individual treatment plan.
  • Once orthodontic treatment is complete, retainers play an important role in maintaining your results. Wearing your retainer as recommended helps preserve alignment, bite function, and long-term stability. Following your care instructions and attending follow-up visits are key to supporting lasting results and improved function.
  •
Surgical orthodontic treatment may be recommended for adults whose jaw growth is complete and who have jaw or bite concerns that cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone. Orthodontic treatment is often started before surgery to properly align the teeth and prepare for the surgical phase. Candidacy for surgical orthodontics is determined on an individual basis through a comprehensive evaluation, including imaging and growth assessment, and our team works closely with oral and maxillofacial surgeons to guide care at each stage of treatment.

Pain is managed with anesthesia and post-operative care; discomfort is minimal and temporary.
